Mud Baths in San Pedro del Pinatar – A Fun and Relaxing Day Trip

Quick Overview
If you’re looking for a unique outdoor adventure near Orihuela Costa, the famous Mud Baths of San Pedro del Pinatar should definitely be on your list! Located just a 15–20 minute drive from Cabo Roig, this natural wellness spot is completely free to access and open year-round. Rich in minerals and set within the beautiful Salinas y Arenales Natural Park, the mud baths promise not just fun but real benefits for your skin and joints.
Important tip: Always bring along towels, swimwear, and water shoes or flip-flops – even if you don’t plan to swim, you might end up knee-deep in mud!
🚙 Getting There – A Scenic Drive Through the Costa Blanca Countryside
Setting off from Cabo Roig, we took the N-332 coastal road before joining the AP-7 towards San Pedro/Cartagena. Thanks to this route, we avoided any toll fees (a rare exception as Spain mostly abolished highway tolls). As it was Easter season, traffic was light at first, though we experienced a brief slowdown at the roundabout after exiting the highway. From there, it was easy to find the mud baths by simply following the Avenida del Puerto signs.
With a little luck, you can park for free very close to the beach in Calle Campoamor. Even if the prime spots are taken, there are plenty of streets around offering additional parking.

👉 First Impressions and Mud Bath Adventure
After parking, we wandered along the beautiful beach towards the Carr. Camino Quintin promenade, which runs between the Mar Menor and the mud bath lagoons. Several wooden walkways and platforms lead into the water, making it easy to set your belongings down before diving in (figuratively – or literally!).
Initially, we tried entering the water from one of the main platforms, but it was a bit too deep for our liking – we wanted to wade, not swim. Venturing further along the path, we found a narrow trail leading to shallower areas.
Quick note: On the left side, the water is slightly flatter, but we noticed many tiny red worms (likely Chironomid larvae – harmless, but a bit off-putting). So we chose the right-hand side, where the water was shallow, warm, and much more inviting.

Once in, the fun began!
We applied the mineral-rich mud generously to our arms and legs. The tradition here is to coat yourself, let the mud dry under the sun (enhancing its benefits), and then rinse off. Locals swear by the mud’s healing properties, claiming it can help with skin conditions, detoxification, and joint pain.
The experience left our skin feeling incredibly soft and smooth!
Pro tip: The narrow path leading to the shallow spots is quite rocky – so next time, we’ll definitely bring proper footwear. (My poor feet regretted the barefoot decision almost immediately!)

😍 Sweet Treats by the Mar Menor
No beach day is complete without some indulgence!
We headed back towards the promenade and treated ourselves at Churros y Chocolate Victor, conveniently located near the beach entrance. The kid happily devoured a soft-serve ice cream, while we couldn’t resist a large ración of fresh churros.
Churros here are often dipped in thick chocolate sauce (a Spanish classic!), but I personally prefer them dusted with sugar. Prices were reasonable considering the prime location, and sitting by the sea with delicious churros made for the perfect ending to our adventure.

More to Explore at the Mar Menor
If you have time, consider strolling or cycling along the promenade to Lo Pagán, where you’ll find small cafes, playgrounds, and cozy beach bars. The Mar Menor’s unique ecosystem, with its calm, warm waters, makes it ideal for families with young children, paddleboarding, or simply relaxing.
There’s also the Salinas de San Pedro, a natural park filled with salt flats and home to beautiful flamingos – especially between spring and early summer.
While there are other mud bath sites in Spain (like Caldes de Montbui near Barcelona), the San Pedro Mud Baths remain special because of their easy accessibility, natural beauty, and free public access. The combination of saltwater lagoons, therapeutic mud, and nearby amenities makes it a top choice for both locals and visitors.
